Mustang Football Passing League Schedule
Each summer, the Mustangs participate in a number of organized passing tournaments. These tournaments are usually held at other area high schools on Saturdays during the summer and can feature as many as 20 or 30 competing programs.
Additionally, we often enter a local passing league held at El Camino College on Wednesday evenings during the summer, where we go head to head with some of our Bay League rivals.
The primary focus of the passing tournaments is to develop the offensive passing game and the pass defense. This is a very specialized part of football, requiring precise timing and recognition that you have to spend extra time on at the high school level. We have found that the only real way to develop these skills in our players is through extensive repetition. And the passing leagues give us a competitive outlet for teaching our complex patterns and passing schemes during the summer.
The passing leagues are primarily for juniors and seniors, though we have gone to lower level passing league tournaments on occasion. The competition is essentially a 7-on-7 drill with teams alternating their offenses and defenses with each score or turnover, just like in a real game.
Every passing tournament that we go to has an accompanying lineman competition. So in addition to the quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, linebackers and defensive backs, who participate in the 7-on-7's, the offensive and defensive lineman also have strength and quickness competitions that are fun for them and help bond the units.
There's always an Olympic lifting competition, be it the squat or clean. Often there are also non-traditional competitions for the linemen, like a truck push, a sled push, relays, and tire throws, movements not specifically related to offensive and defensive line play but to strength and quickness. Most of all, the kids really enjoy it.
